THE SMILE - SKRTING ON THE SURFACE

There’s a rare kind of joy in watching real film come to life—grain, texture, unpredictability. It’s alchemy, not just production. As Executive Producer on this music video for The Smile (Thom Yorke’s side project), I had the privilege of bringing that alchemy to the surface.

Directed by long-time friend and BAFTA-winning filmmaker Mark Jenkin, and produced through Bullion Productions, the video was shot entirely on film inside the haunting, atmospheric depths of Rosevale Mine in Cornwall. Mark even developed the rushes using the minewater itself—because of course he did.

To capture the singularity of Mark’s process, I also commissioned a short behind-the-scenes film. When the work is this textured, this handmade, it deserves to be documented.
